Leaving your Religion?

or still feeling the effects?

It's not the end of the world! Join us for a powerful weekend with others who can understand and support you.

RELEASE AND RECLAIM: Sorting it our and Healing, August 8-10, 2008, Berkeley, CA

Join us for a powerful weekend with others who can understand and support you. This is a supportive program for those wanting to let go of toxic beliefs and recover from an authoritarian such as Christian fundamentalism. We'll rant and rave, tell our stories, discuss the issues, visualize, role-play, dance and draw -- whatever it takes to think for ourselves and reclaim our lives. A joyful empowered life is your birthright and you can start now. Come to a weekend for help in you healing and bring your sense of humor too.

This retreat will be led by Dr. Marlene Winell, author of Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving the Fold. Dr. Winell has a private practice in Berkeley, California and is also available for telephone counseling. More information: www.marlenewinell.net. 510-292-0509

WHEN: FRIDAY, August 8, 7PM until SUNDAY, August 10, 3PM

WHERE: A beautiful house in Berkeley, California, with hot tub and other amenities. The closest airport is Oakland, and we can help you with connections from there.

COST: $320 for the workshop, $125 for room and board. $445 total. $25 discount given for full payment by July 20. FINANCIAL NEED CONSIDERED and options available.

TO REGISTER: Contact Marlene Winell for a telephone discussion about your interest. Send an email to mwinell@gmail.com or call 510-292-0509. $100 deposit will then secure a space. Register soon as group size is limited to 8.

Note: These retreats are designed to help develop networks of support that extend beyond a single weekend. With time for sharing meals and relaxing in a house together, participants often make lasting friends - face to face, not virtual! We also have an online group and conference calls as a follow-up support system.

The retreat is also open to professionals by special arrangement with Dr. Winell.

Thank you Marlene for your post and your concern to help those who have chosen to move on from a religious high-demand organization. The transition can be very daunting and we welcome any help.

I think the problem with "retreats" such as these for most of us is mainly an issue of travel, support and financial concerns however as most of us left rather young and many have families and careers etc... and thus are unable to take "time out" and attend workshops such as these. It is good to know though that there are organizations where one can turn to.

Again, thank you for the post and we will be sure to pass on the information and make it available to ex-members of "The Family" and other groups via RISE and SPF.

Add to that the fact that many of us do not have family support structures in place to offer financial and other resources if our parents have remained in the group. I like the idea of this type of thing and your rates do seem reasonable. I think for grown up survivors of high demand organizations you may need to bear in mind that it's likely to rankle that as survivors and victims we now need to outlay financially for support in our own recoveries. Leave the fold and become part of yours? I'm no sheep, thank you. I can get through life on my own.

The problem Marlene with your post (which if you are an expert on high demand groups i.e. cults you should be aware of), is that it sounds to much like a cult "fellowship" with "bonding", and "skits" and learning lessons etc. I am sure you have done plenty of good in your time, but this post makes me shudder.

I think she is secular though. There are that many fundamentalist Christian groups in the States, it's good somebody's doing something to help. This could be very useful for some of the SGA population. Dr, could I suggest you post this information on xfamily.org ?(reply to this comment
