How much money do you spend on food?

from banal_commentator - Tuesday, November 09, 2004
accessed 3966 times

This is banalest article ever, but I was wondering how much money people spend on food each month?

I hate spending money on food, it pains me so bad. It's like paying to get fat. Last month I spent about $500 on food (that includes fattening, time-wasting, banal trips to that generic, monopolistic, addictive, wasteland that is Starbucks.) But 500 dollars on food!!!!???? $500 US dollars on food for one little person who isn't eating Filet Mignons is a bit excessive. Doesn't everyone think?

So now, since we have nothing better to do with our time, lets all talk about this. How much do you spend on food? Is this a lot or not enough? Discuss!

Well, $500 is probably the average a single person would spend on food if they were eating out all day. If you can afford it, then more power to you. I however cannot afford to spend that much on food. I have two kids and I would say that I probably spend about $300 - $400 on groceries a month. We eat out maybe once a week but most of the time the kids eat at school and I take my lunch to work. There are a lot of ways you can fix nice meals on a limited budget if you plain it right and create somewhat of a weekly menu. I usually buy meat and cheese when it is on sale and then freeze it. Most fruits and vegetables that are in season are fairly cheap too. Since I stick to mainly fresh fruits an veggies and not too many pre-prepared meals, I can usually budget my meals pretty well.

I agree. If you eat out often it's pretty easy to spend $500+ on food a month. The Army gives a single soldier $240 a month for food. If I cook my own meals (morning/evening) it's plenty.(reply to this comment

I see it as $500 divided by 90 meals. That's about $5.55 per meal. Not too bad.

Starbucks and food ---two of my favorite pass-times---honestly I spend so much money on both that I should own stock ( at least in Starbucks general food might prove to be a bit harder) But who cares I make a lot of money so why shouldn't I spend it.---umm I'm not looking for a lecture so don't bother answering that question.

Actually, $500.00 is not really alot to spend on food when you break down the expenses. During a month's time, I spend about $120.00 on groceries, $220 on food at the company cafeteria and eating out, and about $180.00 on booze when I go out clubbing---A very necessary and large supply of my diet--All of this adds up to over $500. After all this is America we have every kind of food in the world and plenty of meat and vegetables at a reasonable rate.

After all those years in the family, sorting through garbage to find out decent vegetables and having to eat potatoes, rice and noodles and tofu and nato and onions for sometimes days on end. Since then little sis', I have made the concious decision to take good care of my body and instead splurge on the good life through food! And I am not FAT and I don't think you would be too if you spent $500 going out. Mankind has always slaved day in and day out to have just enough food to feed their bellies so in this day and age it might as well be good.

Thanks banal,

Until now I was living in ignorant bliss as to how much I spend on food. After reading your post I was curious and began adding up my receipts from last week.

I spent about $120.00 on groceries, $40.00 on lunch at work, another $20 every weekend at IHOP for breakfast with my sis and friends and another $50-80 on dinner out once or twice a week. So on average about $ 200-250 a week and doesn’t include what I spend on wine and starbucks. Damn !

Of course it’s not all spent on me alone, when I cook at home I’m also cooking for three or more others as I love to cook for people and when I go out to dinner with friends I often pay for theirs as well esp. if they are visiting me from out of town.

Good food happens to be one thing I really enjoy. I can’t stand cheap crappy or imitation food, for example if I cook steaks it’s always t-bone, NY strips or top sirloin, never that chewy tasteless chuck bone and if we go out it’s always a nice quality restaurant with good wines and flavorful food. I hated eating crappy rotten food 2 thirds my life and refuse to ever deny myself such a wonderful pleasure.

Great, me too! Yes, I spend at least that amount on food a month, not to mention the beverage bill which can amount to quite a bit. But as someone else on here so kindly pointed out, we've earned the money and the right to spend it as we wish.

I'm sorry, but good food is a wonderful thing that I'm just plain NOT giving up! I can finally eat all the things I dreamt about growing up. We eat very healthy and I think that actually higher quality foods, health foods and a balanced diet can sometimes be a lot more expensive here in the US than ramen noodles and McDonalds. Well at least about $700-800. Yes it sounds like a lot and I was wondering how I've managed to do this. I thought about it and the thing is I live pretty modestly and I really don't have any debts, I have no creditcard bills, I only use my creditcard for things like booking flights online or things that require one. If at all possible I use cash or my debit card. I don't like to spend money I don't have. I don't have any car payments either my only bills are my rent and utilities. I also have no dependents. I don't spend a lot of money on myself I don't care much about jewelry and any that I have were gifts. I'm not into name brands and won't by a shirt just because it says Guess on it if I can find the exact same one for half the price just without the Guess tag.

So really eating out and entertaining friends are my only real frivolous expenses. I suppose all that will change when I eventually buy a house which I should do soon and should have done long ago. When I do I will definitely need to cut down and probably should start now.(reply to this comment

I only eat once a day, but that one meal is a bit big, so I guess it doesn't count as a measure of saving- and I may snack a bit. But of course being a student and spending money on food brings with it a certain anathema. It comes to about £150 a month, which is something like $280 (I think), but I honestly don't worry about it too much.

To be truthful, I usually buy the ingredients for one meal and repeat that meal through the week. It's boring, but I'm a guy- some things don't require variety.

I remember when I first left TF I was able to get by spending only $20 per month on everything. I felt so rich. I was busting my ass as a waitress, and suddenly I had "wealth". I remember the look on the bank teller's face when I asked her how a checking accout worked. Before I knew it I had my first $1000.

That was then and this is now. I generally don't cook or eat in. I try to avoid junk food, so I end up going to those stupid preppy places with fancy names. The food is good though. I spend about $10/day on food. I eat out and drink/party out, and that is usually $75 - 150 per night. So that's about $600 per month for me.

I've really become very used to money, so when I go back to school first time, I have no idea how I'm going to handle a budget. Right now, if I see something I like, I buy it. If I don't like it in a few days, I give it to someone else. But I have no guilt. I feel like I've earned my money, and can spend it however I want.

(Agree/Disagree?)

I try to stay under $150 a week on food & household items, with a family of 5. It is possible to stay within that bracket. Having grown up in TF, I still only eat whole wheat bread & brown sugar. I guess that has stuck with me. ha! Not a bad habit though. But I see no harm in eating white rice. I try to eat healthy & we as a family, if we eat out, try to not eat at fast food restaurants. Really the food is gross & the after taste is gross too. After reading about the guy who only ate Mcdonald's food for a time, & who got very sick & his liver had serious problems. Makes you never want to eat there ever. The only thing about some of those fast food restaurants is the food is cheaper & fast. If you want to go healthy you have to spend more.

As far as spending money on food. It something you have to do. I think that the Family has given people the mentality that it's a waste to spend money on food & that everything should be provisioned. I remember in one home we needed milk but they said it was too expensive. It is ridicuous looking back that they called everything expensive & that we were going to have to go with out, unless the Lord provides it. I remember even reading how one home didn't buy disinfectant as they said it was too expensive. So we shouldn't feel guilty on spending money, hell, you have to eat some how. Of course some of us , & the ones with bigger families have to live within a budget, so understandably we can only spend a certain amount. I think that having had to live on less most of the time in TF, has helped me to be very thrifty with money. I remember when I was a teen that it was lucky that all the teens & adults were able to get an allowance of $10.00 a month. Of course that's nothing, but back then you really treasured any money you could get. Then we would write our needs on a list on your OHR's. Not that you would get your needs. Ha I remember needing panties & all of mine were old & the elastic wearing out. So I asked for new panties & them telling me to pray for new ones. I had to look in the "forsake all" & luckly I found one pair that barely fit. So when that $10.00 came around boy was I desperate. I bet others of you have similar stories or maybe if you were in WS always got your needs. I have heard from others in WS that they had big birthday parties & people in WS always got their needs. I remember a CRO passing through our home one time & they had a very expensive new car they were driving, with a 6 or 10 CD changer in their car. They were nice people, but it makes you wonder where all that money really goes that you send in tithe. There were some pretty poor homes that could have used some money, but not that people would get their needs, as most often then not ,it was the shepherds & their families that got their needs & then maybe the rest of the home. I don't mean to vent any anger, but it just seemed so unfair, but well , the whole family wasn't fair. The Family was supposed to be communal living, which doesn't work. Also giving all your money to the home doesn't work either. I remember one home asked us to all give the money to the common pot, & they were going to do the finances. Yeah right their finances. One day they decided they wanted to get a new paint job on their truck. But while my kids needed shoes & other s had needs to. We gave all the money to the home & anytime we needed soemthing they'd look at us like you don't need it. What is wrong with people. It makes me mad to think back sometimes. Yes I had some good times, but the problem with the family is they want leaders to oversee how you spend the money you make. It will never work to share the money communally. The only way it could work is if everyone puts in their portion of the bills (evenly) & then is allowed to keep the rest. Besides some other changes too.

Anyway, I'm not in TF & can spend my money however I like. Heck even save, hopefully save enough so my kids can go to college when they get old enough to, or maybe have money to buy a house. The family never really cares about you. They can & will kick you you out of TF if they don't like you or if your not this or that, & then after 20-30 years what are supposed to do. You have no money saved up, no education for some, even some people who've lived overseas don't know how to write a check, open a bank account etc.. Then of course after 30 or some years of giving your full 14% they have nothing to give you to help you on your feet, & teens who leave they send them to their relatives, it doesn't show any reflection of being a christain in my eyes. The family could care less. They never had a plan for the SGa's who grew up in TF. They could care less if we had an education, proper care & never had any future plans ,because people in TF always lived for the moment. They "thought we would all grow up & wash dishes & care for kids & do JJT the rest of our lives. Or that Jesus was coming anyday.

Anyway, for you who've left TF keep going on in your lives. It is inspiring that people who've left are able to make a good life for themselves & being able to be happy not having someone correct you all the time for stupid things, which aren't anything at all. Also not having to be around hypocritical,self-righteous people who think they are so spiritual & label you & tell you to share etcc .....

I'm actually happier no, except having to catch up on my education & things I've missed out on. But I'm catching up.

I agree about not wanting to buy food after getting it free for so long. It was a big mental change for me, and took awhile getting adjusted to, the 'waste' of buying brand new, fresh, not outdated food. But it was lovely once I got used to it!! And going to McDonalds to actually buy food for my kids, yeah!! Rather than piling ten kids at the tables, ordering 10 waters and one cup of coffee for the 'adult' out with us, Oh God!! How embarassing were the days!(reply to this comment

Weekly Poll

What should the weekly poll be changed to?

 The every so often poll.

 The semi-anual poll.

Whenever the editor gets to it poll.

The poll you never heard about because you have never looked at previous polls which really means the polls that never got posted.

 The out dated poll.

The who really gives a crap poll.
