I haven’t read it but I just saw the movie last week, which is also called Beloved. Yes Joe, I’m one of those Americans who prefer to watch the film rather read the book. It took me awhile to decide to watch because I didn’t think I’d like anything staring Oprah; however, I was happily surprised at how well made the film is. After all, it is directed by Jonathan Demme, who’s directorial filmography includes The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Married to the Mob, to name but a few, and it shows. The film was two-pints-of-blood-shy from being an all out horror flick. Oprah was looking kind of sexy; but the real motivation to watch the film came by way of the lovely Thandie Newton, who plays the title role. Anyway, check it out if you get the chance to. However, seeing as you have read the book, the film will doubtlessly not measure up. Regards, Anthony (reply to this comment) |

Tony, The movie does NOT measure up at all! Nothing can possibly capture the essence of the fabulous Toni Morrison's writing -- especially NOT Thandie Newton who ruined the part of the very mystical Beloved. I was absolutely disgusted with her performance! Anyway, do yourself a favor and read the book -- I read it in a day and then I read it again, I loved it that much. Sula, however, is my favorite of Morrison's books --a must read for all. (reply to this comment) |

Actually I have not. I have not read much at all in the past couple of yrs. I will be doing more though this summer when I can read outside. My boyfriend is a TV addict and I have a hard time concentrating w/ all the noise. I get extremely annoyed when reading a story which takes place in the 1800's while hearing the sounds of a semi-automatic from the latest action flick blaring in the back ground....... I just hate that!!! (reply to this comment) |
