Getting On : Education

For the Graduate students...

How long did you wait before you went back to school after earning your undergraduate degree? What was an adequate break for you?

Earlier this month, I graduated with my BA in Russian Language from UAA and it feels terrific to have my Bachelor's degree completed. I had been balancing fulltime military service with fulltime school for well over a year and I was completely burned out, but I could see an end in sight, and I knew what I had to do to graduate before I am reassigned in June, so I pushed on and finished. Long before I completed my undergraduate degree, I was all ready finding myself planning out my Graduate studies. Although I initially planned to take a two-year break, the length of my planned break has progressively decreased over the last few months and I am considering taking a class in the Spring of next year so as not to lose momentum. What do you think? What length of time did you wait after completing your undergraduate studies before starting Graduate School? Especially those that work fulltime, what kind of break gave you enough time to recuperate while still keeping you in the study mode? If you get a chance, let me know what you think. I will still be working fulltime+ and my husband's 11-year-old son is also coming to live with us. I still feel exhausted right now but I'm hoping that I'll have the energy to get started again in January. I will be studying parttime this time and my goal is to have more of a life than I've had over the last few years. I know Nan did it and I'm sure there are others. Feedback on this issue will be appreciated.

(Agree/Disagree?)

Congratulations Nique! I also just graduated from College with a degree in Russian and Slavic Studies and French. Although I admit that I am quite tired, I have decided to go straight to graduate school. My reasoning is that it will be more difficult to go back to school once I am used to working (and not being broke). Good luck with your decision!
