AFI Docs: CHILDREN OF GOD: LOST AND FOUND
Q&A WITH DIRECTOR NOAH THOMSON AND A HOSTED RECEPTION FOLLOW THE SCREENING.

This film is the personal journey of first-time filmmaker Noah Thomson and his search for ex-members of the Children of God, a controversial Christian cult. Thomson isn’t just a documentary filmmaker on a mission--he himself grew up in the cult (which later changed its name to the Family) and left it as a young adult. His search for other former child members leads to a heart-wrenching investigation into his own childhood and his difficult adjustment to life outside the Family.

Culled from footage and interviews of ex-members, including many of Thomson’s immediate biological family, CHILDREN OF GOD exposes the prevalent child abuse within the group and the eventual suicide attempts of several former members. Thomson focuses particular attention on the life of Ricky Rodriguez, the heir apparent to Family founder David Berg. Rodriguez's murder of Family member Angela Smith and his subsequent suicide generated national media attention on the group.

Thomson’s three-month road trip winds through South and Central America where he meets with Family members, attempts to find answers about ex-members and their shared struggles to survive on the outside, and negotiates his own place in the world.

I just looked into flying out there and it would be like $350 for the plane ticket alone, which isn't that bad really, I just don't have it to spare. If it were next month I could easily afford it, but this month I got hit with a lot of bills and shit, so.. plus it isn't only the flight, I would need a hotel, car rental food etc. I just don't have it this month. Pity, I really wanted to be there.

It looks like a pretty decent crowd is planning to attend, as of 8/19/07 Sunday evening. I think that having apologists or current TF members there could be anticipated, and could be disruptive. I guess that each attendee is going to have to make some choices between the natural desire to act out, and its possible disruption to the work being honored. I am really glad that I won't even notice the possible disrupters, and hope to blithely enjoy myself and honor a fellow SGA that's doing an important work. For those of you who may be triggered by an actual TF presense, you really do have my best wishes and my hope they may just simply do the right thing and stay away.

Er, I should have said "decent sized" rather than "decent" in referring to the many reservations already made, since the decency of the attendees is the unknown, and is actually the issue! (reply to this comment

Please don't do that. Most of us have friends who are still in TF, think about them before you make rash decisions like that. My friend, Michelle, was on the Prophet Bus. Yes, they're brainwashed, and most of them never saw the worst of the abuse, which makes it very unethical for TF to be using them to bloster their claim that TF is a safe place to raise children. But there was a time when you, and all of us, were just as brainwashed as they are.

Just think about that before you do something you might regret later. (reply to this comment

Samuel, Samuel. My poor mentally retarded friend. You mean so well but you are so abominably stupid.

Do you really think I would spray someone with bear mace? Honestly, I really feel sorry for you sometimes, your powers of observation and analysis are so fantastically diminished that I marvel at your ability to function at all in society....*deep breath

No, I kind of figured you would never spray them with maze, and you were joking, but I do think you should be careful because things like that can be used against you.

Can you picture what the next GN is going to look like?

"(Jesus speaking:) You must fear the Vandari! Do not go to them for assistance, they will not give you a place to stay, or try to inform the governments of the world of your rights, or the rights of your children, or the rights of your younger siblings who are minors. Verily I say unto you, they will not do these things. For they roam the corners of the Earth looking for their prey. They appear as young people, perhaps they are the ones who assisted in your upbringing. But at night, they morph into blood sucking Vandari and howl like wolves at the moon! Therefore you must fear them, my loves, because they are demon possessed. Yea, verily I say unto you, they are demon possessed. Lo, they have even set up special websites for themselves, where they can collaborate and aim their attacks at you, my chosen ones. For just the other day, I was reading around on these sites and behold, him who is of the heathens was planning a vicious attack. They will use mace, but not of the form that is intended for humans. As the cruel beast that they are, of the species of the Vandari, they will use mace that is for bears. They are beasts, and so they will use mace that is intended for beasts.

" You may say, 'We implore you to reveal the name of this website, and the meaning thereof, that we may visit and know when these things should come, and what shall be the sign of their coming' But I say unto you 'Nay, for there shall no web address be given unto this generation'. But the following tips will keep you safe from their attacks.

1. Stay away from anyone who goes by the name 'Shikaka'

2. Stay away from ex member sites. Really, you don't want to know what they have to say. It's all lies anyway, no abuse ever took place, Amen? Remember that Satan owns the internet, and the information you find when you do 'web searches' on The Family is not to be trusted. It is Satan's web, do not get lost in it. If you get lost in Satan's web, you are out of my circle of protection.

3. Stay in your loving homes. No one else will help you or offer you assistance in any form. It's a scary world out there, but you can avoid it by obeying my Word and staying in your communes. If you have doubts about The Family, or are considering leaving, please speak to your Shepherd. They will tell you what MO letters and GNs to read, and how long you should fast and pray for.

4. Keep an eye peeled when out witnessing or doing outreach, for anyone who has bear mace. Do all these things, and claim the power of the keys, and you will be protected from all of these attacks. (end of prophecy from Jesus)
