Getting Out : Seeking Justice
idea: online statement | from Wolf - Thursday, January 20, 2005 accessed 1306 times Is anybody else tired of hearing TF’s line of crap that we are just a few bitter ex-members, and that most ex-members are still friendly to the group? I’ve thought of a way to completely disprove this false notion, but it will require a bit of sacrifice on our parts. We can electronically “sign” a statement that would read something like this: I was born in the religious group known as the Children of God, Family of Love or the Family International. I am no longer a member. I was abused while growing up in this group, or personally know somebody who was abused. I am aware that this abuse was a direct result of David Berg and Karen Zerby’s writings. I would like to see the group’s leadership and individual abusers brought to justice by non-violent means. (end of statement) A form would be added to the movingon site (I can write the code) allowing any of us to sign this statement by entering our name and address. This information would not be associated with our nicknames, so those of us who post anonymously can continue to do so. I am personally not too keen on posting my name and address, but I think this is the only way we can conclusively show that there are a large number of ex-members who are willing to take a stand against TF’s abuse. I know many ex-members who don’t visit the movingon site but are concerned about bringing TF to justice, I think if we set up a form as described here and write them about it they will add their names and addresses to the list. We will have a big advantage if we can say, look, here we are, there are hundreds of us. Meanwhile TF will continue to cower in corners, not giving their legal names or addresses to the media. It will be obvious who is telling the truth and who has something to hide. I’d be happy to hear some feedback on this idea. |

Reader's comments on this article Add a new comment on this article | from Mir Friday, January 21, 2005 - 11:36 (Agree/Disagree?) Do it Wolf, I'll sign! I know of others who would as well but I agree that I don't really want my legal name to be made public, more for my family's sake than my own... (reply to this comment)
| from Christian Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 22:21 (Agree/Disagree?) I will sign this statment no problem. I will also include my first name and my last name and all contact information. Pls let us be a part of bringing them down (reply to this comment)
| from comment Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 19:43 (Agree/Disagree?) I like the idea but... I don't want my name to show up on that list for any of my co-workers, friends, etc. to find during a search engine of my name. And I don't want The Family to have my name and address, and if this is a statement against them, it will end up in their hands. Is it possible to have a court or firm collect our signatures and addresses privately where they can confirm that we are who we say we are, and represent a victim of TF's abuse. They could then post an alias for us with their backing that we have been validated. Isn't there something like this for the rape sheild law that protects the alleged victim from being confronted by his/her perpetrator until court at least? (reply to this comment)
| From Wolf Friday, January 21, 2005, 03:50 (Agree/Disagree?) Information from the form doesn’t have to show up on this web site. The form can be designed so that the data is collected in the movingon database, and only the initials (for example) show up so that the person knows his / her submission has been received. The information will not be found by a search engine. Of course, you would still need to trust the movingon administrators, that they will use the information wisely (I’m not a movingon administrator so I’m not asking you to trust me. I wouldn’t have access to the database). As for doing this with a legal firm, that costs money which I can’t provide. (reply to this comment) |
| | From pandora Thursday, January 20, 2005, 21:22 (Agree/Disagree?) Just a quick question. Has anyone ever contacted any good attorneys about filling a group lawsuit agains Karen Zerby? I am sure that there are some of us in law school who might have some ideas on this matter. Writing names down to prove a point is a good idea, but to what end? What is our ultimate goal? Is it not to see justice served? They know we are telling the truth otherwise they would not go to such great length to try to disprove what we are saying. There is a lot of media all over this story right now but who is going to give a shit in a couple of weeks? I just wish that there was some way we could stop the insanity of The Family at it's core. Karen Zerby (or whatever her current name is) needs to account for her actions. How is it possible that in the 20th century there is no way to catch a criminal and make that criminal pay for their crimes? We need to look at the big picture. In my opinion we second generation members are not the only victims here, our parents are as well. What we have to remember here is most of them joined when they were messed up kids and had no were else to turn. They were then, in turn, abused by their leaders and brainwashed to the point of no return. Even if they wanted to believe us they can't because it would mean their whole life was spent living a lie. How many of you have told your parents about the abuse you experienced in the group? I think most of you have. It is not something they want to hear so they just tell you "forgive and forget". They can't deal with it, if they were to it would mean turning their back on everything they gave their lives to. The founders of this evil are the ones that need to be brought to justice. They need to answer to all. Maybe I live in a dream world, maybe they have accumulated so much wealth over the years that they are untouchable, maybe not. Has anyone tried? (reply to this comment) |
