Facebook
I would just like to invite anyone who is in college right now to drop me a line at facebook to share experiences. If you're not familiar with it just go to www.facebook.com It's a site where students from thousands of schools can exchange info. My name is Talitha Fout and I am at SUNY Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York. Once you have a profile listed you can find practically anyone if they have a profile as well. I don't know any ex members in school so would love to chat. Tally  (reply to this post)

for being an overacheiver, I prefer to have a life (and I'm chronically lazy) I blame the cult for always riding my ass and never teaching me to motivate myself :-)

Education IS important!
I know pretty much everyone agrees with me on this. But I just found out today that I passed my GED test (I know, I know, about 100 years too late!) and I'm really psyched about it. It's an amazing self-esteem booster especially since I haven't had any formal education since I was 13 and math is a black hole for me, so I figured I wouldn't pass. (Also, not filling out most of the booklet tends to make someone think that.) Anyway, I can now take college courses that I've been wanting to for a long time and I'm really, really happy to find out that I might not be such a dummy after all! Wahoo! :) So for anyone that wants to take the test, but think they "can't" for some reason or other, if I did it, anyone can.   (reply to this post)

I remember that day like yesterday
Congrats! I still remember that day when I first got to the us, education is mostly perseverance, but also a state of mind. Once you know what you want that's half of it already. I found out I didn't need a highschool diploma to go to community college, but it helps, since placement exams review a lot of the same info, at worst it's a great refresher. Then of course policies vary from state to state.. here I go gabbing away again. lol! Just wanted to congratulate you Deb, run for that dream!

That's awesome!
What great news--That is so cool! Did you study for this at all or take any practice tests, or just do it?

What college courses are you planning to take? (Are you going to do them locally?)

RE: That's awesome!
Yeah, thanks. It feels good, believe me. I didn't study for it, which I should have done, but at least it didn't harm me too much. I'm planning on taking law and criminal psychology, but it's still a lot of red tape since I have to do it on the American Army Base here. It's a bit of a hassle and expensive, so it's not moving along as quickly as I'd like. As least it's moving along...
(By the way, sorry it took me forever to answer this, ha!)

RE: That's awesome!
Hi Deb,

I think that you doing law/criminal psychology is far out. Two questions: 1) how old are you, 2) have you joined the military to fund it?

Thanks,
Mel

Slow reply...
I'm 26 and I didn't join the military, but I can take classes on the 8th Army Post here. It's a little expensive but worth it in the long run.

In Canada? Education?
We have heard a lot about what was available in the USA for education, but in Canada what is available?  (reply to this post)

RE: In Canada? Education?
I am a part time student (mostly for interest, I already have a career) at a University in Canada, and can tell you a bit about what I did. The school I attend (and most do the same I believe) has pre-university courses that mature (over 21) students can take. These are 3 nights a week, and last a full semester.

Having never taken an exam before in my life, this was excellent preparation for the real thing. These courses are subsidised, if you need it, and a passing grade (70%) counts as qualification for entrance into the University.

If you are in a low income bracket in Canada, the government provides student loans. If you have good credit, the Canadian banks do. (Unfortunately, I am in neither category.) There are a number of grants and scholarships available as well. The top students in the preU courses get a partial scholarship for their first year.

Associates, 4yr degrees, Masters, PHDs IN CALIFORNIA
Wow, so how much does the government put out in Canada? I just finished my 3rd year and basically I've made money from going to school. The pell (Federal) grant covers 3000 a year and there are several student institutions like "Extended Oportunity Programs for Students" EOPS that has paid all my book fees and offered counseling sessions to plan out every detail along the way. For the first 70 units there is also a program here in So cal called BOG (Board of Governors, fee waver) where all tuition fees are also waivered) So actually I've never had to even bother for a loan. It's almost been like a secod job, the money you get from the Pel grant is yours, you don't have to pay it back, In fact I spent it all on stuff I liked, like a new laptop and digital video camera... So there are a lot of opportunities out there, I'm not sure if other states are as student friendly as here with community college tuition fees of only 11 dollars a unit?(which can be waivered if eligible for the BOG) But the Pell is federal so that even works after one is done with the Lower Division (approx. first 2 or 3 years depending on the major) Majors are of one's choice, from film school, to law, to mechanics, art and design, computer sciences... and the list goes on. I thought it to be too good to be true... Lot's of tax dollars, that's for sure. But it's all out there, just takes a few minutes to fill out the paperwork, of course the studying and GPA is up to the student, some restrictions and limitations apply depending on income bracket, dependancy, and natinality.

Fuck you!!!
When i first started reading this I thought, you fucking tosser! But in actual fact it's been just as easy here in Plymouth. As long as you can apply yourself to the studies, there's plenty of help, financial and otherwise for UK students.

I hate students whose parents pay the rent, but when my kids go to Uni, its gonna be rent paid, car bought and bills get sent home. I recommend Uni to any Brit who's got their upstairs motor running, because it's pretty doable. Well, if I can do it...

Fair warning
Just a warning for all those who have withdrew from school and are interested in FASFA . . .you might have a tough time the first semester & be denied financial aid because you withdrew from courses in previous semesters. I was denied this coming semester because several years back I got the "bug to go to school" realised I wasn't interested at the time and did a big W on 3 classes . . .it's currently biting me in the ass! Arg! Wish I would of known that so I could of dropped instead of Withdrew. Now I have to appeal to get FASFA for the coming summer & fall semester.
