Getting Through : In Remembrance

Every time you go away...

Every time you go away…

I wanted to say something to my brother Josh before he took his own life.
I wanted to say something to my brother Timothy before he went in for surgery to correct a congenital heart defect.
I left so much unsaid to my brother Sam who died of an overdose.

You were all so young, so full of life & then one day you were gone.
Consequently, it is difficult not to miss you & to wonder what might have been.
What dreams may have flourished in lives lived so briefly?

I’m getting better at wearing a suit, & all of us look great black.
The rest of us are getting older, & time has done things to us that it will never do to you.
We watch your children grow up & they remind us of you.

We live our lives to do the things you never did, & we miss you.
There are photos in the album, but empty spaces in our lives.
And every time one of you goes away, we think of all the things that we wanted to say...

I'm so sorry for your loss Chris. I knew most of your brothers well. I'm really sorry to hear about Timothy. I have so many fond childhood memories of him. He was my first best friend, and made some of the hardships of life that much more bearable.

We used to do silly things together, like change his asthma capsules with vanilla powder and inhale them. We built forts in the farmer's fields. We always had the exact same amount of demerits, and served our punishments together. We used to fake arguements so we would be forced to do JJT together.

I remember once when I was two demerits short of missing our weekly movie, I went to call Timothy to the movie. Apparently I was too loud, and got 2 demerits and had to miss the movie. Timothy intentionally ran passed the adult who gave me the demerits, and was chalked up for two. We spent movie night raiding the kitchen to supply our fort.

I wish I could have gotten back in touch with him, but even though our friendship was so long ago, he is missed.

I've shed many a tear for you xchrisl, and I don't even know you. My heart is with you nonetheless. It's not those who have past who ache. They are at peace. It's all the ones they leave behind. So many aching hearts is a tribute to them in a way. It shows all the lives they touched.
