Getting Through : Music and Songs
Art Cannot be Imitated | from Moonsetter - Tuesday, February 20, 2007 accessed 832 times The Family International, whether labeled as a cult, NRM, sect, or church, has completely failed in its attempts to produce ART. Tamar...highly praised by many Family members for her "artistic skills and creativity", turns out to be nothing more than a skilled plagiarist, imitating artists like Luis Royo, and Boris Vallejo. In the ART of music, we have more plagiarism in such a sickeningly obvious degree, like the majority of the music Vas creates - heavily influenced by Social Distortion, or the countless other Family songs in which someone like myself can simply name a mainstream band being directly imitated - Disturbed, Shakira, The Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, or Creed etc. What the Family needs to do is focus on creating a style of music which actually expresses the experience of "serving the Lord" and "service unto Mama Maria" and things of that nature, using musical skill not to simply create compositions which sound identical to other artists, but capture that deep sentiment that every Family Member is trying to express. It is common for basically every band existing in the world today to have influences from other bands, but the extent to which Family music is influenced by the mainstream is simply extreme. Instead of trying to produce music that they believe appeals to the 14-17-year-old audience ("Look son, this super cool new TCD came in the new mailings today...it has a song which sounds just like your favorite System band...now you can destroy your favorite System band's CD and listen to this instead. Praise the Lord?"), the Family must promote the creation of music inspired by the individual. The Family actually seemed to have this idea working for them back in the 70's - Aaron's music for example - too bad that guy jumped off a cliff...he definitely kicked Singing Sam's ass. ART CANNOT BE IMITATED! IMITATED ART IS NO LONGER ART! PLAGIARIZED MUSIC IS EQUIVALENT TO SLIMY EXCREMENT! VAS IS A WHINY BITCH WHO ALWAYS DREAMED OF BECOMING A ROCK STAR; AND FOUND HIS FAME AND FORTUNE IN THE FAMILY! |

Actually, apart from music that they put to their own lyrics, most artists "plagiarize" from other artists, although they tend to call them their influences, or muses. It is pretty funny though because, they don't believe in listening to non family music but a lot of their music certainly sounds like it, however, that comparison to TF and Black Eyed Peas sounds a bit strange to me. From the stuff that I'd been unfortunate enough to have had to listen to, TF does not know how to create even a resemblance of sound made by rap or hip hop artists. While I don't listen to any kind of rap or hip hop, my ears were almost literally bleeding at some of the crap ass music they'd put out. Besides, christian music as far as I'm concerned, sucks butt, no offense to God or whatever but I can't stand to listen to that stuff. to me, there is somewhat of a concurrence between good music and sex, but the mixing of sex with christianity is very icky. Interesting concept, I actually think that the Family could actually make quite some interesting and unique music and art if, like you said, they stayed true to themselves. Whether or not Zerby is deluded it is not the function of an artist to reform his society or humanity. Instead he should depict the spirit of the age and what he sees and feels, with fallacies and delusions necessarily included. Great art can capture a delusion and make you a part of it. Even if there is no heaven if you listen to certain incredible pieces of music describing the intensely religious feelings of the author, you can begin to understand, feel, and share what heaven meant to him. To me aarons songs seem more artistically expressive than Ftts are exactly because they can invoke in me the image of the minds of dazed confused rejects blubbering into the accepting arms of religious delusion. | From Moonsetter Thursday, February 22, 2007, 08:48 (Agree/Disagree?) After "The Songs that Made the Revolution", the lyrics of Family songs have gradually degraded to endless repetitions of the Family's beliefs set to plagiarized music (as mentioned above). Although Aaron's songs are not to my tastes, at least they managed to capture like you stated so bluntly "the image of the minds of dazed confused rejects blubbering into the accepting arms of religious delusion." - and thus could be appreciated as some form of art. "Great art can capture a delusion and make you a part of it. Even if there is no heaven if you listen to certain incredible pieces of music describing the intensely religious feelings of the author, you can begin to understand, feel, and share what heaven meant to him." Well said. I couldn't have said it better. (reply to this comment) |
| | from cheeks Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 13:07 (Agree/Disagree?) Why anyone would want to sing about Zerby is beyond me. Does the catholic church have songs about the pope? Do any religious movement have any songs about their leaders? The baptists, mormons, budists anyone. Hello. What jerk off would want to sing about Zerby. I would think this would take up more of you time rather than what the Family has taken from true artists. (reply to this comment)

I do find it amusing how Berg was in absolute denial over his suicide... claiming "god took him cuz he was too good for this world". (reply to this comment)
