Getting in Touch : Events
Finance Page Updated | from tuneman7 - Friday, March 11, 2005 accessed 1468 times Finance page just updated, Friday March 11, 2005. A huge thanks again to everyone who has contributed to the Memorial fund. I received an I.M. the other day from a friend of mine in Switzerland, an ex-SGA. She's a wonderful woman, a single mother with two young boys. She struggles just to take care of herself and her children. She told me that she had put a cheque in the mail. ... It made me cry. I've never been so touched by the decency and nobility of spirit shown by people on this site and others who have helped to put this together. It amazes me, that people who never met Ricky, Elixcia, Sarafina, myself or others, have given so much of themselves to make this possible. The finance page has been updated. http://www.stoplyingpeter.com/memorialfinances.aspx |

At this late date, do you think a paypal account could be set up for those of us who wish to wire money? Has this already been covered? Sorry if I've missed it before, if someone could let me know so I could send something. Thanks. (reply to this comment)

Hey just a question I noticed a large part of the estimated costs were for food, do you plan to cater or sell food there? If you are catering maybe we could just eliminate this cost altogether, Sarafina I hope you reach your target goal I would donate more if I can but like alot of others I really can't right now. Best of luck and see you there tho, (reply to this comment)
| From tuneman7 Saturday, March 12, 2005, 22:57 (Agree/Disagree?) Yeah, it's kind of bogus the way that they do it. The rental of the outdoor area isn't that much, however, we felt that it would be good to have a reception since a lot of people are coming from all over. We didn't want to have to move from one venue to another in order to have a reception. Also the date co-incides with the Easter weekend, which, I think, is why they're trying to do as much price gouging as possible. :-( They actually don't charge for the use of the reception hall, but they force you consume a minimum amount of food. We actually wanted to bring our own food to the memorial, I.E. cook it elsewhere and bring it there. But that's not an option. So the way it works is that we'll purchase as much food as we can with the funds we have available by the time of the memorial. Hopefully we'll be pretty close to the mark. Then they'll be a bar, and a few other things there in the reception hall. Whatever funds we're short, we're hoping will be made up by being able to rely on the drinkers and snackers amongst us. :-) Don't even worry about trying to give more. Most of us have struggled seriously with poverty and being destitute as the result of leaving with absolutely nothing and having to start from scratch. I know I did. I was talking with someone the other day and we were talking about how difficult it was to get started. We were talking about eating at McDonalds and I was telling my friend how I remember being so destitute when I left and was trying to get started earning very little money and trying to pay for my books and tuition fees, that I would pass up that McDonalds, not because the food was terrible (no offense to the McDonald fans), but because I honestly couldn't afford that cheeseburger. So I know how it is. If people have a choice between sending money, or using the money to buy a plane, train or bus ticket, buy the ticket. I'll borrow a few tents from some of my camping friends, and we'll camp out on the beach, or we'll try to find a friend who's willing to provide lodging. The important thing is that we're there. Thanks again. (reply to this comment) |
