Our only view of the US was from movies, many of which are made in, & often feature Southern California. Those of us being US citizens moved to California because of perceived familiarity. Don’t forget that Southern California has great weather & lots of coast line—attractive to most people. I’m guessing that most of those (but not all) spread out in the rest of the country stayed close to where they grew up, or they were already familiar with this country so are comfortable anywhere here. Perhaps there was a large number of homes already in Texas, or a large number of soon-to-be ex-culties already there. Also, coming from overseas—not to mention a sex cult—it’s helpful to move somewhere already open-minded. (reply to this comment)
