fishing in seattle | from seeker - Monday, October 07, 2002 accessed 2256 times Anyone know anything about the fishing boats out of Seattle? I have a friend (who does not come here)who is interested in working on the boats. If you have any first hand experience, or know anyone who does, mind letting me know? Thanks |

Im one of the guys that live in San Antonio and fish, Im a four year verteran. Those of us that have it as a career are few (about 5) we work from Jan to April which is A-season, then from June to August which is C-D season. Its true that the work is rough and the weather is less than perfect, but if your a good worker it does pay off. We all got promosions and have supervisor positions now. What most people dont know is that theres different levels of pay which is why some ex members get off having made a butt load of cash and others just enough to barely be satisfied. When we go out to sea we sign a 5-6 trip contract (a trip ends when the boat is full and we have to go into dock to offload) At the end of every trip each crew member gets evaluated 1-4 levels and each of those levels get a different bonus amount. Generally exmembers do quite well on the boats and we help quite a few every year get on. I have never known an ex member or member to walk off my boat with less than 17 grand in A-season for just under 3 months of hard work, and of course there are the good ones that walk off with quite a bit more. If you do the math thats about $14 per hour and thats not including the days that we dont work because theres not fish. During the winter season processors work 16 hours a day 7 days a week. In the summer season they work 12 hours a day. All the vessels leave from Seattle WA and fish in the bering sea Alaska off the Alutian islands. One of the best companys to get on is American Seafoods. Anyway I just thought Id put this on here since I get many many e-mails asking about it. (reply to this comment)
| From Seattle Resident Sunday, November 24, 2002, 03:42 (Agree/Disagree?) Vinny I know exactly what I'm talking about. I've talked to lot's of guys who went on the fishing boats. I know you make lot's of money as you've gone on it for 4 years and you've been promoted, but it really depends if the fishing was good or not. Some years are good others are not, then you can do the math. I know people who worked in A season and got paid $6.50 an hour. You of all people should know that being you've been on the fishing boats for so long. When it really comes down to it I don't give a shit. You are the best person to talk to when it comes to getting a job on American Seafoods. So peace and have fun fishing. (reply to this comment) |

| | from Seattle Resident Wednesday, November 06, 2002 - 04:22 (Agree/Disagree?) It's going to be Season A soon and that is when you make big $$$. It's really rough work and very little pay based on $ per hour. The benefit is you don't have any where to spend the money when you are on the ships so you can take home quite a nice sum if you work 18 hours a day for a few months in the winter. The best company that all the ex-family members I know go to, is American Seafoods so just click on the following link to download an application form. http://www.americanseafoods.com/application.pdf (reply to this comment)

| | | from faeriraven Monday, October 07, 2002 - 11:47 (Agree/Disagree?) There's a lot of guys in San Antonio, TX that go on those boats every year. I'm not sure if they're on right now but if I talk to any of them, I'll let them know you're looking for info. I know one or 2 of them come on this site occasionally. I'm not sure if it's the right guy, but if you go to the user directory and look up 'Benny' - you can email him from there and I think he's one that's in touch with the guys that do that, but...as usual, I could be wrong.
