Getting Support : Speaking Out

Request from a researcher

from Tim R - Tuesday, February 08, 2005

I recieved this request from a researcher who is interested in talking to Second Generation Family Exmembers.

E-mail from Joan Dietch:

I am an independent researcher who is fascinated by the flower children generation who joined the Children of God/The Family cult. I am focusing solely on the children born into and raised in this cult and then when able chose to leave the cult.

My focus is on their adjustment to traditional society...have they achieved higher education, well paying work, structured lives? And the opposite, difficulty with work because of lack of education, cautious with those other than exmembers. Do they need guidance in this outside world (the system)? These are the kinds of interests my study is taking.

Exmembers in the US are of course easier for me to interview on camera. This March I will be in the Florida area and am open to speaking with those interested in participating in on camera interviews. You may post all of this or whatever part you feel pertinent,

Thank you, Joan K. Dietch

PS: I’m leaving Michigan Feb. 20th, so I need to hear from those who want to participate before then if possible.

Before anyone contributes I'd recommend finding out a little more about this person. "Independant researcher" is just so vague. Is this person an academic and if so, what instituion do they belong to? Who is funding the work? Or is this person just an interested amatuer? Is publication of the work planned upon completion? All things to ask before anyone goes spilling their guts.

It doesn't sound like an academic. Most academics would have a university email address (i.e. usually ends in .edu). Also, few academics would have the need to do on camera interviews. Sounds suspicious.(reply to this comment

What should the weekly poll be changed to?

 The every so often poll.

 The semi-anual poll.

Whenever the editor gets to it poll.

The poll you never heard about because you have never looked at previous polls which really means the polls that never got posted.

 The out dated poll.
