Getting On : All My Politics
An interesting debate: | from Samuel - Friday, December 15, 2006 accessed 942 times Here's a good debate about free speech. The Department of Motor Vehicles in Virginia has recalled the vanity license tag of a Kirsten Norman, after citizen complaints that they believed her tag, which reads "STFU PLS", is an acronym for "Shut The Fuck Up, Please". Kirsten Norman is in the process of disputing this action by the Department of Motor Vehicles, and says that the vanity tag was her way of paying tribute to a friend who passed away. He was a cancer patient, and they used the phrase "Stay True For You" to encourage each other, and cheer each other up. "PLS" was the friend's initials, Paul Luke Stanford. So, does this woman have the right to ride around Virginia with this tag of her car? Should this tag be revoked because someone may be offended by it? Is this a matter of free speech? How far should the State be allowed to go to keep someone from being offended? The article can be found here: http://www.thesmokinggun.com Click on "archive", then click on " 'Licentious' Plate Tribute Rejected " on the next page. It should still be near the top. |

Puleeze, this crazy chick should be allowed to write whatever she wants if it's initialized. It's not near as bad as the bumper sticker I read that said, "My Cat saved Lives it's saved" or "This car was made by men with tools not chopsticks!"--on the back of a Chevy Van. Today I was behind a van when I noticed that the frame for their license plate said Molalla on the top and "fucker" on the bottom. It took me a while to figure out that it was originally "Buckeroo" and they had just colored out the "oo" and part of the "B" to make it look like an "F." Anyway, I thought it was amusing. | From Samuel Saturday, December 16, 2006, 06:23 (Agree/Disagree?) She's not going to lose, she's a fighter. Did you read the letter she wrote to the DMV on the last page they showed? Good stuff, wish I could write that good. Creative writing is one of my strengths, but this girl is GOOD at it! Somewhere, someplace, some judge is going to realize how stupid this all is and rule in her favor. And while I'm here- Happy Birthday, Xeena!(reply to this comment) |
