Getting On : All My Politics
A Day in the Life of a Republican | from frmrjoyish - Monday, September 20, 2004 accessed 1596 times Something to think about........... Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and pours water into the coffee-maker to start the morning. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal group fought for minimum water quality standards. With his first swallow of coffee, Joe takes his daily medications, which are safe because at least one stupid commie liberal fought to ensure they are, and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of Joe's medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan thanks to a group of liberal union workers who fought for paid medical insurance. Now, Joe gets the medical coverage too. He prepares his morning breakfast -- bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some pro-feminist liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its percentage of the total contents. Some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on (and in) his body. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because more than one environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking fees and it all came about because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation. Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with very good pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation thanks to some lazy liberal union members who fought (and died) for these working standards. Joe's employer pays for these benefits so the employer doesn't have to hassle with the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a workers compensation or unemployment check. That was the work of stupid liberals who thought he shouldn't lose his home because of a temporary misfortune. It's noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit, which is federally insured by the FDIC or FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression. Joe pays his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan. Turns out that a band of elitist liberals had decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he were educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father that evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. Joe arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house, financed by Farmers' Home Administration since bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big government liberal (FDR) stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. Joe is happy to see his father, who is now retired and living on Social Security and a union pension. This came about because some wine-sipping, quiche-eating liberal pushed for the start of the social security program, which made sure his father could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host repeatedly says that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. The radio host forgets to mention that his beloved Republican conservatives fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. But Joe thinks the radio host is right: "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have." |

Reader's comments on this article Add a new comment on this article | from GetReal Monday, November 07, 2005 - 10:40 (Agree/Disagree?) no one can say that being just a LITTLE bit Democratic is not evil. Yes Joe might be able to see what kind of shampo he uses and the air is .0000000000000001 percent cleaner because of Kyoto, but lets not forget that all Democrats got one kind of important some thing from conservatives. The United States of America was founded, made to work, and fought for by Christain conservatives. Surly that should acount for some thing now even if all they do now is fight against abortion, fight wars for oil, cut fucking taxes, and geting rid of the wast of money that social security is. LONG LIVE Rush (reply to this comment)
| | | | | | | | | from Vincet Monday, October 11, 2004 - 08:31 (Agree/Disagree?) A comment about the radio rightwingers in the next to last paragraph. They are there because the American public allowed Reagan, the Newt congress, and the Bushes to hand over the media to Rupert Murdoc and his friends. This is an excellent example of what is desperately needed from all libber-als - EDUCATION! If we are smarter than constipated conservatives, we need to educate the public so that they can get over the 4 horsemen of Republican Dogma: Ignorance, Fear, Hate, and Greed. (reply to this comment)
| from moon beam Sunday, October 03, 2004 - 09:12 (Agree/Disagree?) According to the press in the UK Kerry won the TV debate, at least they said that he didn't sweat too much, but as I missed the actual event due to it being on so late at night, I was wondering if any one here saw it? | | | | | From frmrjoyish Sunday, October 03, 2004, 10:17 (Agree/Disagree?) Bush appeared irritable, defensive, and annoyed at having to stoop to a "debate". Overall, Bush was extremely emotional while Kerry was calm and resolute. Bush answered the questions in such a manner that s suggested that his positions are implicit and don't need an clear explanation. Seems to me like a pretty big gamble in so close an election. I think Kerry won hands down! And foreign policy is Bush's supposed strong suit! Can't wait 'till the debates on domestic issues! (reply to this comment) |
| | | | | | From frmrjoyish Sunday, October 03, 2004, 10:36 (Agree/Disagree?) Bush exemplifies the unilateral approach to foreign policy. "We're 'mericans! We don't need noone else"! Since all he has to run on is fear of "everyone else" and since Americans are understandably fearful these days, he's capitalizing on it. The "We're the best, we can kick anyone's ass, and God bless America" attitude is prevalent amongst the middle part of this country who tend to be lower to middle class. The "keep 'em scared and throw 'em a few crumbs every once in while" approach seems to work on a majority of Americans, unfortunately!(reply to this comment) |
| | | | | | from shikaka Thursday, September 23, 2004 - 11:44 (Agree/Disagree?) Perhaps you should petition Kerry for some of his campaign funds, fmrjoyish. What a spellbinding pro-Kerry advertisement! You Democrats will get some extra stars in your crown for all the good you've done the USA. I even began to tear up when I read about the union members who fought and DIED (I imagine bloody braveheart-style battles, with the corpses of brave democrats piled high in some warehouse) for their noble cause. Very well written article. If I wasnt such a fan of anarchy/police states, I would vote democrat. (reply to this comment)
| | | From frmrjoyish Thursday, September 23, 2004, 12:51 (Agree/Disagree?) First of all I didn't write the main content of the article. I included a credit to the original author but it was evidently edited out before it got posted. And second, nowhere in the article does it even mention John Kerry. Although I do support his bid for the Presidency, my comment below was made in jest in response to another comment I'm assuming was also made in jest. Your mocking tone of actual historical events is very sad and hints at your immaturity. History shows the sad levels that even a great Democratic society can come to without the proper safeguards. In this great democracy we are all so proud of men, women, and, children toiled and, yes, even died to make a select few very rich. There's nothing wrong with profiting from the great opportunity here but that opportunity must be available to all. And the laws must be written to ensure that equality. Unfortunately lately as the divide between the rich and the poor in this country gets bigger, opportunity for all is becoming more a pipe-dream than a reality. So I suggest that next time you're tempted to make fun of the unfortunate who've died while trying to achieve the American dream but at the same time making it happen for someone else more fortunate, you think twice about taking it so lightly!(reply to this comment) |
| | | | | | From shikaka Thursday, September 23, 2004, 19:40 (Agree/Disagree?) "Youre telling me how to think. How very presumptuous and egocentric." "No, I'm telling you to think before you open your mouth!..........." Let us pause awhile and consider: You are telling me to think before opening my mouth..which would qualify as a thought process. Therefore, you are attempting to regulate my thought processes...which would qualify as TELLING ME HOW TO THINK! And yet, strangely, you contradict your own statement with that "no" at the beginning. | | From shikaka Thursday, September 23, 2004, 18:59 (Agree/Disagree?) The way you emphatically pronounce your opinions as unassailible truth is a neverending source of amusement to me, fmrjoyish. Why, you think Im immature? What a devastating blight on my self-esteem! Why dont you perform the coup-de-grace and tell me that I'm ugly as well! That would destroy all of my hard-earned credibility. Small minds bore me. (Dont disappoint me with a lame comeback, please.)(reply to this comment) |
| | | | From How? Friday, September 24, 2004, 16:34 (Agree/Disagree?) I really don't see how shak's comment was offensive. Your article might have been offensive to me as a Republican, but it wasn't because I could write a similar article about a REAL day in the life of this Republican, and shed some light on the annoying bullsh-- Democrats put me through. It's just not worth my effort. I don't wanna support my political party by slandering the opposition. (reply to this comment) |
