Getting On : Career

Questions about Rose McGowan

from Joe H - Wednesday, July 10, 2002
accessed 5584 times

Does anyone know if she was really in the F? Some of the stuff she said in an interview with Howard Stern doesn't make much sense.

Here is a link to the full text of the interview: http://lavender.fortunecity.com/dale/536/media/arthoward.htm

She talks about FFing and other stuff on a real superficial level, then later goes on to other weirdness:

RM: My rules were my father...I had to sit on my butt all day long and learn how to snap my fingers when I was six, otherwise God wouldn't teach me how to drive a car when I was sixteen

and later:

HS: How'd you get out of the cult, like when you were fifteen you just said I'm split'n?

RM: No, we were nine, I was nine, uh, we actually had to escape cuz alot of kids were disappearing into child slavery rings, I know it sounds very fantastical

HS: No, it doesn't

RM: I could be sweeping Kadafy's door step right now, basically

HS: Your telling me, alot of the kids disappeared

RM: Well, what would happen was if there was a bunch people in a family, a bunch of kids and the parents wanted to leave or something one of the kids would disappear

HS: Really

RM: Basically as a warning that all the other ones...and it's very difficult to get out of , and I remember there was this crazy black guy name Peppa that I woke up with when we went to our first kind of escape house thing, and I woke up with him like swinging outside my window and trying to hammer the house down...very strange people

HS: Where are the police in all this

RM: In Italy? (laughs)

HS: Oh, that's true

RM: My mom, when she was 9 months pregnant with me, the Italian police were trying to climb on her, thats what was going on there

HS: But I don't understand something, so when your 9 you get out of the cult and...

RM: Come to America

HS: And where do you go, who do you live with

RM: Well, I went to live with my grandmother for a while in Gig Harbor Washington, which was quite a bit of culture shock

HS: Right, but at least you got out

RM: Yeah, well

Honestly, does this sound a little embellished to any of you?

I don't hope to offend Rose in saying this, because it's directed at posers in general, but people who pretend to have been raised in cults because River Phoenix was or for whatever other bizarre reason, trivialize our past and insult us in a big way. I'm not calling her a liar, I wasn't in Italy and I don't know, but it would be nice if someone could clarify this whole child labor thing.

(Agree/Disagree?)

Hi,

I just want to ad that i do know that she was in the Cog. I knew her parents in Italy very well. I knew her when she was a baby u until the time that i left Italy in 74. I think from what I have read of her experience and how she related it, that it makes alot of sense, even if she seems to get a few things mixed up. I knew Her father to be a very talented artist and he was for the most part a good friend. He could also go off the deep end pretty quickly, had a quick temper, and was somewhat arroagant. He was very talented and Intelligent, and enjoyed a protected position, both for his artistic skills and his ability to play the game, and stay in favor with the prevailing leadership. I felt myself, personally betrayed by him, because I was basically banished from Italy, and sent to God-Awful Iran, partly on his evaluation of me needing to adjust my attitude to be more in line with the group. He probably did me a favor. More on Rose; She was to me, the most beautiful child I have ever known, so funny and bright, really intelligent and aware. At one year old, she woiuld look at me and say something unintelligible, but I knew she knew what she was saying, and she knew I was listening. She would raise her eyebrow neven then.

Knowing her parents and her, is what made me want to get married and have kids, when before I didn't have much hope in the whole concept. After leaving the Family in March 78, and in all the years since, I had wondered about some of the people I knew, and hoped that they were ok. Rose and her parents were amoung the ones that I hoped for most earnestly. Irregardless of her fame, now, or however she is portrayed by anyone here or in the Media, I am so very grateful to know that she is alive and well, and successful, and I hope that she is happy.

I actually never really gave her much thought as an actress, before I realized whao she was. I had seen her in stuff, and recognized her when I saw her in other stuff, but didn't really like the characters that she always seemed to portray. I didn't even bother to know her name. There was always soimething about her that reminded me aof something, and I felt anxiuos about that, but just thought it was the pouty, snotty characters that she was doing, and I thought there was aomething odd about her face. Then about a year age, I raed an article about her, and about her being inb the COG, and it all made sense. The funny thing about her face that I had been noticing, and I don't mean this in any way insulting, is that she has a bit of extra fullness in her neck, and seems to have a second set of cheeks, pouty lips, and dagger eyes. thse are some of the promenent faetures of her mother, who I always thought was a very unique looking person, and a very beautiful woman.

Anyway, I'd say, give her a break, she did good for what she's been through, and all of you should know that, there is usually more to a story than what you might see or hear in the media, or what you might percieve and misunderstand ouyt of ignorance.

I sent some pictures that I had of my days in Italy to the website x-family.org, and they have posted them in the section relative to their page on Rose. I ahve one more that I have to scan and send so in a couple of days that will be there too.

I always called her Rosa Budda. She was one of the coolest little kids In have ever known, and I am deeply saddened by what she had to experience, as I am for all of you, and I am very glad that she is doing what she is doing now, and for what you all are now doing this.

I read an article in the Enquirer with the father last month and it didn't make sense to me as the father said they used drugs LSD and coke for their sex sessions(???). I hadn't known about this "past". Also he said he still supported them and how he worries for his daughter who is now a systemite.. something about how she's sold her soul to the devil bollocks. It also said was having sex vey young. He was actually proud of the FFing period in his comments. Then it is the Enquirer!

I was also in till the age of 11 and am now 28. My memories are just fine. I was separated from my brother and sister for years at a time so I can understand her confusion. Funny , someone mentioning Certaldo, Italy. My sister was born there. We visited right before we got out in '86 and had no problems driving up to the barn where my sis was born in 1973, same year as Rose, I wonder if my our moms knew each other. That would be too crazy, sinse my parents lived with the Phoenixes in Venezuela when I was with another couple in Curacao. My mother told me she had to spank him alot. Lot of good it did him....

This doesn't have anything to do with RM, although I do remember reading about her being in the F. once upon a time. I did a few searches on her and different sites said she had left at different ages so I think she gets her age mixed up when she gives her interviews about when she left the F.
Anyway, on to my question, did anyone see the "Howard Stern" show with Davida and Pamela Anderson? I saw it a couple years ago. Davida put on a really thick British accent, I don't know if it was for the show, since she did come from England, or if that's the way she talks now. :)

The Internet is certainly full of contradictory information about Rose McGowan, but I don't recall her ever contradicting herself in interviews she's given (I read a number of them while putting together the xF article on her: http://www.xfamily.org/index.php/Rose_McGowan ).

I've never personally felt she intended to exaggerate anything about the Family. Her dad sounds fairly strange... she doesn't only talk about things he's told in the past like that god want's her to snap her fingers, but also weird things about him from much more recently.(reply to this comment

go to netcenter.com and type in Rose McGowan. There are different sites for her and some of them give her history where it explains that she left the Children of God cult when she was 15.

It seems like she was in the family but what she remembers is pretty screwed. I mean some of what she says she was taught, what's w/ the whole driving thing and snapping fingers???
She didn't talk @ child abuse or anything like that, just child labor, which we all were subject to. Sounds like some of the things she just made up to make it sound more crazy. Hammering the house down?? That just seems pshyco. I dunno what to think @ her.

Totally off the point that she might have been embelishing the truth just a frac..(something she learned b4 the age of 9 no doubt.)
But forget that 3 'cool' witches crap.
Her best work I've seen was in a movie called "The Doomed Generation" (no it's not about kids in cults).
It's a pretty fuckin strange movie, which is always good.. I think it was her first (big?) movie.
I'll never know why she sold out to the whole 90210 type pukes..

Anyways she left when she was 9 for chrissake. Can anyone actually honestly remeber the shit that was happening in the Fam. when they were 9
I dunno about kids going missing.. I know my brother went 'missing' for many many years to a nice lovely little childrens holiday resort known as 'VictorLand' (which is why I never felt I really had a bro.) Funniest thing is(not 4 him) I was the one wreaking havoc (drinking coke etc) way back then. I guess God must've gotten our names mixed up. (Don't u hate it when he fucken does that)

All that to say this.. Rose is 1 fine(sellout) honey..
& you know what they say.. Any truly honest publicity of the fam. Is good (4 us)publicity..

I left the Family when I was 11 years old and I remember what happened to me in the Family from the time I was 3 years old and up. I'm sure she remembers but what happens to little kids is a little different that what really happens because it's so terrifying and confusing. To her people who wanted to leave the Family just disappeared. In actuality they probablly did leave but the Family liked to cover up those things so in her child mind the best explanation for their disappearance is that they were sold into child slavery. Makes perfect sense!(reply to this comment

you're hilarious man. And yeah, what probably happened was that one of her friends disappeared to a victors camp, and she remembers it a little differently, although having been in one myself I can say that they were a lot like child labor. About her fears of working for Qadafi, we should all be so lucky to be sweeping his porch. She should count her blessings that she's not still postering or taking care of some Uncle Enoch's kids!(reply to this comment

I can understand the whole child labor thing. Taking care of dozens of toddlers when you're 13, cooking for hundreds of people, spending eight hours on the street selling posters, tapes, and videos, is not normal. In fact it's child labor. What I don't understand is the children disappearing bit. Very odd. I know parents and children rarely lived together and sometimes one didn't know where the other was, but disappearing to put fear in others??? Oh well, she was nine. She might not remember too clearly. I sure as hell don't remember too much from when I was nine. In fact I sort of try to block it out. It was horrible in a lot of different ways.

After reading the articles from the links given...I would have to say, yes, I do think she was in the group...but I find it hard to believe some of the things she said...it's very possible that she was exaggerating (after all, she is a natural born actress).

She is Barkos Doodler's daughter. My father knew her parents. She lived in Certaldo, Tuscany. She went back there with Marilyn Manson a couple of years ago and they tried everything they could to get the Canevaro's (Emanuele Canevaro) to let them see the property, since she was there during her childhood (can't remember if she was actually born there)
Well Manson got quite pissed as they were turned down but I guess in the Tuscany countryside they do not swoon to celebrities.
It sounds a bit dramatized, but then with Howard things usually super dramatized anyway. (reply to this comment
