The Island--Almost too familiar

I watched the movie "The Island" yesterday, starring Ewan Mccreggor and Scarlett Johansen. I dare say it all was too familiar. The fact that they kept all those people in submission by having one cohesive memory implanted of a worldwide catastrophe, and their lack of knowledge reminded me all too much of the cult. From the earliest time I remember, from flanelgraphs, to audio tapes to literature, I was always reminded of some impending doom, 666, anti-christ, nuclear war etc...In some ways that kept me in submission and being able to endure the harsh lifestyle in the cult. Also the part in the film where it states they are taught only up to 6th grade level and everything they are taught is too encourage passive group behavior, was so damn similar to what I was raised with. The more I think about it, I believe there were definetely some conspiracy by WS to implement passive inducing material for children and members in the cult. Excellent movie btw, gave it a thumbs up, even though rottentomatoes.com gave it a thumbs down.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw it. Another movie like that was The Villiage.

Yea " The Village" is an excellent example of control by fear and ignorance. When I saw it, all I could think about was how much like the cult that little place was. How they thought that they had the right to lie to their children, blinding them to the real world simply because of THEIR extreme views and beliefs! Fucked up!(reply to this comment

"The Giver" by Lois Lowry is a short excellent novel about life in an almost perfectly controlled society and an attempt to escape it. I recommend it.(reply to this comment

The Giver is in production now and scheduled for release
as a feature length movie in 2009. I hope it will be as good as the book!(reply to this comment

Actually I suppose that this movie will be on the family rated list. Depending on what society you are in influences your associations. No doubt they will say that those under control are like those in the system...etc etc.

Movie had some good action but the preview told me practically the whole plot.(reply to this comment

Yeah it is, "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood also has a few striking similarities.(reply to this comment

I hope they make that into movie form. I have a hard time reading books nowadays. I've just become such a TV / movie junkie. Anyone ever find out that since they left they have a hard time consentrating on reading a book or watching boring media? I have to have my TV turned on all the time when I am home. Not me, I dedicate about a half hour at least to reading while in bed just before turning the light out and going to sleep. It helps me to get to sleep easier and I get to forget about the world and my problems for a bit and enter the world of whatever book I'm reading, it also helps me to not dream about the stresses and problems of my life. Right now I'm rereading the hitch hikers guide series, Douglas Adams is a freaking NUT HEAD, but he is SO funny. (reply to this comment
