Dr Phil?

from NClaunch - Thursday, August 24, 2006

A friend of mine caught Dr. Phil today and said he did a show on TF. Did anybody else see it? The one showing late tonight is on something else.

Might not be my place to say anything, but Jim and co seemed more attention whores than anything else.
The Dr. Phil show bore all the marks of a sensational crowd pleasing/shocking commercial exploit.

The UK show was focused, to the point, detailed.

Still, I wouldn't at all discount the trauma they went through, and the testimony of Kristi, China and Hubby was very moving. (China always looked good on film. Looks like all that Video training paid off eh TF film producers?)

Hope they all get to truly move on, and I would definitely recommend they sue their parents for all the damage caused. I think suing TF itself would be ideal, but I don't know how that's legally possible.

It takes a lot of courage to go on camera concerning past abuses suffered, regardless of how "good on film" one looks. You posted without a screen name. Is this because you disrespect those who have stood up while you have not? Those that chose to be guests on the Dr. Phil show (perhaps excluding Jim) did not know exactly how the host would frame their contribution. Still, they went on determined to tell their side of the story.

And if someone decides to sue their parents, please understand that it is a very difficult decision to make, affecting not only their own lives but those of their sisters and brothers, too.

Perhaps you should be less concerned with others "get[ting] to truly move on" and more concerned with your own growth. What do you think, anonymous poster? (reply to this comment

Well hey, I didn't say I had anything against em. I said "they seemed". Obviously the show would have had a different agenda than Kristi and co. Still the focus was on them, and very little attention was paid to the problem they came from.

Suing parents might be a difficult decision for some yes. Not for all. Even if it was difficult, I'd still recommend it. The only reason I'm not suing anybody is because it would cost more than it would bring in. My parents don't own any assets. Suing them would cost a lot of money.

Hey, I respect the SG that went on camera. No love for the Jim dude though. And I don't think that program would help anything. For such a high profile show, it was a waste of airtime. (reply to this comment

I disagree. I think the show was powerful. Maybe the British documentary was done in a style that is harder for TF to call "sensational", (though I bet they will anyway), but remember it only aired over there.

A friend of mine called after seeing the repeat and said it is a miracle I am still alive after having gone through such a level of abuse.(reply to this comment

The two aren't really comparable, IMO. A talk show will generally not have the same gravitas as a serious documentary, I suppose, but that does not mean that the content can't still be powerful. Perhaps it's more of a matter of reaching a different audience.
