Getting Out : Media Reports
Photographs? | from KateCoe - Wednesday, April 27, 2005 accessed 1809 times I'm looking for photos of the Victor Camp in the Phillipines. I'm still editing my piece for "A Current Affair", and I'm hoping against hope that someone might have a photograph of the Victor Camp in the Phillipines. Any Victor Camp photo would be great. I realize this would be incredibly rare. My story will air sometime during May (sweeps, you know) and my bossses are sending out our host, Tim Green, to tape an introduction here in LA. Thanks again to everyone I met in San Diego, and all of you to whom I've spoken or emailed. -Kate Coe |

Reader's comments on this article Add a new comment on this article | from TV Guide Sunday, May 08, 2005 - 14:49 (Agree/Disagree?) http://www.acurrentaffair.com/showdetail.php?eid=47 A gentle man comes to a violent end. What demons drove Ricky Rodriguez to kill his former nanny, then himself? If you think the Michael Jackson case is shocking, wait ‘til you meet the “Children of God.” Founded in the “Free Love” era of the 1960s, this California sect preached a message of salvation through sex. Yet as A CURRENT AFFAIR reveals on tonight’s report, kids became innocent pawns in this secretive group – none more so than Ricky, whose private torment led to his own personal apocalypse on January 9, 2005. IN GOD’S NAME David Berg’s Children of God sect began in a Southern California storefront. According to Berg, his new “religion” was about “beautiful people, beautiful men and women, beautiful youth, even beautiful sex.” In the 1970s, the organization reportedly attracted the likes of Jeremy Spencer, Fleetwood Mac’s original guitarist. Later, actor River Phoenix spent part of his childhood in the Berg fold. Once Ricky became an adult, he left. Got married. Moved to Arizona. But he remained haunted by his past. CHILDREN OF GOD Childhood pal Daniel Roselle says Ricky was exposed to sexual activity early on: “It was no longer wrong…for an adult man to have sex with a young girl. It was no longer wrong for an adult woman to have sex with a young boy.” Don Irwin recalls occasions “where adult women suggested they were going to make themselves available for sexual activities with me. In both cases, I just told them [I’m not interested]. I want to play with Legos.” Check your local listings http://www.acurrentaffair.com/watch/index.php (reply to this comment)
| from Monday TV Sunday, May 08, 2005 - 13:19 (Agree/Disagree?) "30 mins. An Investigation into the practices of the Children of God, a California religious sect which was founded in the late '60s and has reportedly been investigated by authorities in several countries on charges of forced menial labor, child abuse and using prostitution to attract new recruits." | | | from moon beam Friday, April 29, 2005 - 05:15 (Agree/Disagree?) In the TTC (Teen Training Handbook-Green) they have pictures from a few of these camps mentioned. (reply to this comment)
| | | from sarafina Thursday, April 28, 2005 - 16:33 (Agree/Disagree?) One more thing, the letter "Flirty teens beware" does anyone have a copy of it or a scanned text of it? If you do could you please email me and I'll explain what for. Thanks =) (I might as well ask it here so I don't have to post a whole other article) (reply to this comment)
| | | from sarafina Thursday, April 28, 2005 - 16:30 (Agree/Disagree?) Hi Kate, Thank you again for coming to the memorial it was nice meeting you. One thing that might be confusing with your request is I don't believe it was called a "victor program" at least not the one in the PI, it was either called the Teen Training camp (the one Ricky went to) or the Y.E.S which stood for “Youth Educational Seminar” this one was in 85 or 86 and is the one that I went to. (note; there was absolutely NO "education" being taught there unless, you count Bergs ramblings as education) (reply to this comment)
| From Nancy Thursday, April 28, 2005, 16:39 (Agree/Disagree?) Hi Kate, Pleasure to meet you in San Diego. Thank you for doing this piece and helping us to tell the public what happened to us as children. Sarah, could she be referring to the Jumbo? It was just as horrible as any victor camp. Kate, was it the large compound where many teenagers and children lived in the late 80s / early 90s? That would be the Jumbo. Jules and others here have info on it. Maybe, one of them has a picture by chance. It was a large facility with hundreds of children and teenagers. It had armed guards at night. (reply to this comment) |
| | From :c] Thursday, April 28, 2005, 20:33 (Agree/Disagree?) The Jumbo in the Philippines is a huge property on Mariposa Street off Edsa in Manila. I remember the name because Mariposa means butterfly in Spanish. If you want to film it for a documentary it shoudn't be hard to find because Mariposa's not a long street, but you'd have to get permission from the present renters or owners. That's about all I remember but hope it helps. Maybe you could rent a helicopter and fly over & film it?(reply to this comment) |
| | From me2 Sunday, May 08, 2005, 17:25 (Agree/Disagree?) The Jumbo no longer exists. It was torn down shortly after TF moved out, and in its place are several condominiums. The PI Jumbo held the very first Victor Program under the watchful eye of Sarah Davidito, and many of the other ruling party of the day. Ricky (of the LWG stories) and Malaysian Mary were the Victor "shepherds." Lonnie Davis was heavily involved, being called in for the spankings, sometimes public events. 3 or 4 poor 11 and 12 year olds were enrolled in the very first program, and received such unwarranted harsh treatment, all in the name of "love" of course. One of the girls was thrown in the program because she had the nerve to ask one of her shepherds, "What is there to be happy about?" Well....plenty(reply to this comment) |
| | | | | | | | | | From former Victor Thursday, April 28, 2005, 19:42 (Agree/Disagree?) To the best of my knowledge, the Phillipine Jumbo came first ('86-'88?), soon after that was the Detention Teen program in Macau that Merry Berg was in ('87-'92?). During &/or slightly after the Macau program were various Rotten Apple and Intensive Care programs at the HCS in Tateyama, Japan ('88-89?). Then comes the Victor Programs, the series of programs I got to go through('90-'93). These were started in Japan in late 1989 or 1990, last one I guess wdve been about 1994, and it seems like about every country had them in some form or another. As far as photos, I dont know, they did an Aurora Productions video about the Japan Victor Company (sorry, Japan Victor Program, not JVC :)) to get other places to set theirs up. It would have footage of smiling happy victors singing songs to Jesus, praising the Lord that they are restricted from speaking to each other. I wouldn't know about photos other places, certainly we werent allowed cameras & if any photo had someone other than yr immediate family during the 90s, the photo was destroyed. I will say that there were people in Victors with me who knew Merry Berg and wont talk about the IC program in Macau; from what I've heard it was one of the worst, locked in rooms, worked 19 hrs a day, sexual abuse of minors, etc, doubt there'd be pictures.(reply to this comment) |
| | From TCer Friday, April 29, 2005, 01:00 (Agree/Disagree?) And at the TC ("Training Center") in Thailand, their Victor Programs were called the "New Models", and that program lasted several years, and there was a shorter, more severe program called the "MAPs" which consisted of some major hard labour. Corporal punishment was used in both programs frequently.(reply to this comment) |
